I wiped the hdd clean using acronis partitionexpert. I reinstalled the firmware. Make sure it's supposed to be FAT32 and doudle-check that you formatted it correctly. Also, double-check the jumper. I know for sure that XP didn't work - don't know why not, but I was told that the format method of the hard drive was not compatible with XP or DOS at all. Hope that helps!
