G3 skin cutting tool
They feature the same innovative tip and tail attachment system found on the G3 Alpinist skins, but have a noticeably thicker and heavier skin material that provides better grip and worse glide. With a name like High Traction, these skins better deliver strong grip and they definitely live up to that standard.
No splitboard skins are perfect, but if these set out to achieve great grip, then they have certainly achieved that goal. The normal rules of physics and skin tracks still apply: if you use poor technique to climb a steep and slick skin track, you will likely still slip. If this happens, you should blame the jerk who put in the bad skin track or yourself for bad form, as the skins will be hard to blame. This model is similar to the Voile Skins with Tail Clip which have great traction, but relatively little glide.
This is less noticeable when ascending, but can be easily detected on flat or rolling terrain where these skins will glide noticeable less than a skin with better glide like the Alpinist or Jones Nomad. These skins feature the same attachment system found on the Alpinist model. The nose in particular is cleverly designed with a hook placed completely on the inside edge. While they are very secure, if set up tight, they can be tough to attach or release from the splitboard. I t takes a little longer to reset the skins, but oh, the result is so fine.
I do about 30 sets a year,. I have them on my climbing approach skis old Tua Excaliber with Silvretta binders and have never had an issue on powder or icy conditions. The straight skins are easier to fold and keep clean as well since it is the same dimension for the whole length. My 2 cents…. Oh — almost forgot — I do wear my helmet and safety glasses when I have used a razor blade to cut skins. BD cutter work just fine — plus when your done cutting the skins — they work great as letter openers…..
They ARE letter openers. G3 rules the day, for sure. Repositioning is a waste of time. I love this battle, though. The Gecko knife is available in the gecko N. Good fun! Ian, actually, you did throw one of those in the box! Getting the Geckos out is priority. I know that this post is a bit dated.
I was sold on the idea of the G3 trimmer, but the results left me frustrated. First, I think initiating the cut is ridiculous, even with a moistened base, you end up butchering the first few inches of the cut. No matter how many times you go over it again, it still looks like Sh! Thicker models such as the Ascension can afford more base to be exposed.
Even a brand new trimmer from them kinda sucks, initiating the cut was only slightly better. In the end, the BD way with a fresh utility blade takes the cake. I know there is a few more minutes spent tinkering with the 2mm, but I think it is totally worth it for getting however much base you want exposed, with a perfectly clean trimmed edge. Has anyone cut those before?
I assume it will be fine. Then I got the G3 cutter in the box w my new skins. In about the time it takes to write this post my skins were cut — precisely. I take it all back. Those things are are wonderful and everyone should use them. I concur with Joe, the G3 cutter is excellent. Initially I was concerned that the cutter was going to remove too much skin but in the end it does a great job.
I had no issues with the cutter getting stuck; I just attached the skin, centered it, and then slipped the cutter under the skin. I did clean it between skies just as a precaution. I know there were concerns about how well the G3 cutter would start a cut if you were coming at it at an angle, I had no issues. I would totally recommend using it. I followed this thread in hopes of finding a recommendation by a confused rabbi weighing in on skin cutters, but alas it was not to be.
My first skins were Ascensions cut by a gentleman who massacred them so badly the non sticky strip down the center almost touched the edge of the ski. Took about an hour, what with having to clean adhesive out of the scissors every couple of cuts.
Found the BD razor in the box when I was cleaning up later. Used G3 cuter on my third skins and enjoyed it immensely. Instead of doing it for someone who should not be allowed to own tools I purposely said nothing, I just watched him use the G3 cutter and it appears to truly be idiot proof. YMMV but I like the cleaner edge cut an olfa razor knife gives me. So, with trembling keyboard and hesitant finger tips I file this report: Climbing skin cutters for backcountry skiing.
