Ceramic tile ceiling installation

Can you tell us what the size of your floor joists are eg - 2x10 , their spacing eg - 16" on center and the length of the unsupported span eg - usually from a foundation wall to a lolly column supported cross joist or the opposite wall and how much and what kinds of plywood are on the floor now? He has gotten the vinyl up and has sanded the floor flat. If we put cement board over the plywood we're thinking it will raise the floor too high.

We currenly have hardwood floors but will be putting in carpet as the floors are too damaged to repair and refinish so we want the heights to be flush. Wish us luck! We will be trying to get the last of the paper backing up and tiling Saturday.

Thank you for all your advice and help during this project! Can you lay vinyl flooring over concrete? Or over a tile floor? We are re doing master bathroom ceramic tile set in concrete wondering if we can lay vinyl over it without having to bust up the original floor. Probably not a good idea as the indentations in the grout lines will show through over time. If you flash the grout joints and sand the edges smooth that might work but I dont know what type of material would be used.

The vinyl could be laid over the cement slab, but it has to be real smooth, no rough spots or broom finished. Just wondering, thanks. I am not sure what you are asking about.

Masonite is the name of a corporation. Siding is one. Tempered hardboard is another. That is commonly used for peg boards although it is available without the holes. And as is common the original product it calls by the company name and vice versa. But Masonite went on to develope a number of materials. You can either line up all the grout lines which requires planning!

This is simply a personal preference — whichever you think would look better in your shower is the one you should choose. The photos here have all the grout lines lined up. If you do not install your ceiling tile diagonally please line up your grout lines. If you are lining up your grout lines rather than installing them diagonally you can then draw lines on your ceiling as guides to where your tiles should be. Once you get all your ceiling tile up then install your last row of wall tile.

This will help hold all the tile around the edges as well. Be sure not to cut the last row of wall tile so that it barely fits in there! You should know this, just to avoid confusion about an issue that is confusing enough anyway. Schluter recommends UNmodified thinset for the Kerdi membrane. If you choose to use modified thinset over the kerdi membrane it will void your warranty! Just be aware of that. I use modified for two reasons: 1 I prefer modified thinset for everything — period. I take that risk and choose to do so — consciously.

Should you choose to use modified thinset over kerdi you should be aware of this. And no — it does not create any problems that I have ever been aware of. This post was brought to life by the suggestion of one of my readers in a comment. I really do read them! So I would like to thank Michael for kicking me in the ass and making me do something productive! My wife thanks you, too. A lot of people have asked me if their particular size of tile would work using this method — yes, it will.

The size of the tile is rarely a factor. It weighs the same — it just takes up more area at once. And they hung up there just fine. Previous post: What are Lugged Tiles? Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. I was going to use kerdi board on the ceiling, but it is not available supply chain.

Have you had experience with sentinel board? Do you think it will be strong enough to hold the weight of the tile? I have never heard of sentinel board. You can check with the manufacturer for that particular question.

Hi Roger. I am tiling our tub. Three walls and the ceiling. I will be using MegaLite mortar. The walls and ceiling are HardiBacker I have been told to cover with 3 coats of RedGuard for waterproofing. Is this going to cause the ceiling to give way as the bond will be to the waterproofing? This will fill the pores of the hardi and act as a priming coat. Apply that and let it cure, then go over it with the additional coats. Hi Roger, I wanted to say thank you for the great explanations.

Simply hold your cut tile up on the ceiling against the edge. It should fit snugly, but not be too tight or difficult to apply. Attach molding to the borders, optional. If you choose to add borders to the edges of the ceiling, use a staple or nail gun and secure the molding to the wall. Fill the holes with wood filler and paint the molding. Molding can make your room look more polished or finished. Method 3. Locate one of the joists. A joist is a length of timber or metal that provides structural support.

It's easiest to use a stud finder to locate them in the ceiling. Mark the spot with a nail or chalk mark. You might want to start by checking for joists near lighting fixtures since they're often installed along joists. Find the other joists. Measure 16 inches Joists are usually 16 inches to 24 inches Mark a chalk line that shows the joists across the entire ceiling. Install the furring strips. Furring strips are thin 1" by 3" strips of wood that you attach at a right angle to your joists so that they are flush against the wall.

You simply staple a nail into the strip. Use a level and make sure that the furring strip is level. If not, add a shim underneath to make it level. Make sure that your furring strips are at even intervals and that they fall through the center of your tiles.

You may want to hold up tiles for reference as you install the furring strips. Apply the first tile in the corner. Snap a chalk line down the center of the first strip closest to the wall. Align the corner tile with the line and the wall, then staple it to the furring strip, using at least 2 staples along the sides and 1 in each corner. Continue placing edge tiles. Staple the tiles across the ceiling.

Once you've stapled the edge tiles, work your way across the ceiling filling in with whole tiles. You may need to use a straight edge to cut a tile to fit around a fixture. Use those measurements to draw and cut the hole. Not Helpful 6 Helpful 9. Why do you have to put up the furring strips? Why can't you put them on the ceiling? You can if the original ceiling is in good shape. Furring strips are used when there's no ceiling in place or it's in bad condition. See Method 2 above. Not Helpful 0 Helpful 6.

If I start from the center I will have two offcuts at the corners. How can I avoid this? Starting in the middle means you'll end up with two pairs of end rows of equal width, which some people prefer for esthetic reasons.
